This is my painting of my dad, from the same college-era photo as I did this weird method where I toned the canvas and painted the shadows with acrylics, then scrubbed off the highlights with hard brushes. It works really well, although the detail level is down.
Excellent, such a sensitive portrait - you have gobs of talent. Really interesting method. I am wondering if you chose to do something in color with an underpainting, would the highlights come out as the undercolor....now I must experiment and see. This is what I love about artists, this constant growth - you can evolve all your life.
